TBR: Aman J. Bedi

About the Author: Aman J. Bedi

What would you like readers to know about you?

I’ve lived in four different countries — India, Thailand, New Zealand, and now Australia — which gives my writing, and the stories I tell, a peculiar (and hopefully enjoyable) perspective and voice.

What music do you listen to (if any) when you write?

Usually something without lyrics as that tends to interrupt my train of thought. Some album selections from my writing playlist:

• Ryuichi Sakamoto’s 1996

• Dario Marianelli’s V for Vendetta OST

• Max Richter’s The Blue NoteBooks

• Toshifumi Hinata’s Reality in Love

• Jo Blankenburg’s Vanguard

What books or authors inspired you to become a writer?

Books: Legend by David Gemmell, Memories of Ice by Steven Erikson

Authors: Kentaro Miura and Salman Rushdie

About the Book: Kavithri

What is your book about for those who haven’t read it?

Kavithri is an adult epic fantasy in which you follow a railway porter on a journey to find a future for herself while she simultaneously confronts the violence and horror from her and her people's past. There's magic, action (sword fights, fistfights, etc.), and — despite going to some really dark places — plenty of humour.

If you enjoy tight, single POV narratives like in The Rage of Dragons and The Will of the Many, or characters like Arya Stark, Gideon Nav, and Kaladin from the Stormlight Archive, Kavithri will be right up your alley.

What has been your inspiration for writing it?

I’ve always been drawn to stories about the underdog — nobodies who overcome incredible odds, outsiders who do the right thing despite everyone and everything being against them, stubborn fighters who roll with the punches, take hit after hit, and remain standing. Kavithri is my take on the underdog story.

What was your favorite scene or part of your book to write?

There’s a boxing match (midway through the book) that spans several chapters which was incredibly fun to plan and write.

Where can your book be purchased?

Kavithri is available at all reputable online booksellers. It is also currently available in some bookstores in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, and India. Physical copies can also be ordered in local bookstores in the US later (September most likely) this year.

To the Future Writer:

What advice would you give to aspiring authors who want to write a book?

You must care deeply about the story you’re telling (or what you’re writing about), because if you do not care enough, neither will the reader, and you will find it easier to abandon your journey.

What’s next for you? Any events, upcoming pubs, etc.

I’m in the final stretch of the editing process for my second novel, the sequel to Kavithri, which should be released in 2025.
