TBR: Annette Christie

About the Author: Annette Christie

What would you like readers to know about you?

I have a background in theatre and acting, so I approach writing characters the same way I approached playing a character. That means I like to dig into backstories, figure out what motivates their decisions--and I think it's a lot more interesting when characters are messy. Also, I write on the cusp of Women's Fiction and Romance, but I always promise my readers a happily ever after (even if the road to get there is tricky).

What music do you listen to (if any) when you write?

I can't listen to anything as I write, but people who have read my books know that music is an important part of my process, and woven into my stories. I make playlists for each book, I figure out what type of music my characters listen to, what their favorite songs are. In The Rehearsals, Megan and Tom bond over their appreciation of The Cure. In For Twice in My Life, Layla has a love of American Standards and all things vintage.

What books or authors inspired you to become a writer?

When I was a teenager, a dear friend of mine gave me a copy of Shampoo Planet by Douglas Coupland. He's a Canadian author and artist, and still one of my favourite creators. I remember opening that book up and having my imagination cracked wide open by the cleverness, the weirdness, and the way Coupland was able to get to the heart of the human condition. And, of course, I'm inspired every day by my author friends.

About the Book: For Twice in My Life

What is your book about for those who haven’t read it?

For Twice in My Life is my most recent book. It's about Layla, who has been dumped by Ian, the boyfriend she still loves very much. Ian gets into a tiny accident and forgets about the breakup, giving her an ethically gray second chance at love. But things get even more complicated when Ian's suspicious brother shows up.

What has been your inspiration for writing it?

My favourite holiday movie is The Family Stone and I've always wanted to write a book with similar complicated family dynamics. Of course, While You Were Sleeping was also an inspiration. But, ultimately, I wanted to write a story about how sometimes what we see as our biggest mistakes can actually lead to the best things in our lives.

What was your favorite scene or part of your book to write?

There's a scene where Layla and Matt (Ian's brother), have to get through a difficult conversation, and so they get into a bottle of blueberry vodka in order to have the courage. I love writing scenes where what's not being said is just as important as what is, and that scene has plenty of it.

Where can your book be purchased?

Online and in stores, pretty much everywhere books are sold!

To the Future Writer:

What advice would you give to aspiring authors who want to write a book?

The only things standing between you and where you want to be are time and tenacity.

What’s next for you? Any events, upcoming pubs, etc.

My first book came out at the beginning of the pandemic, so all the fun things were online. With this book, I've been able to get out to do signings and even attended the Tucson Festival of Books. It was so wonderful. I'm hoping another festival or two will be in my future, but I'm just working all that out. It's not always easy to balance author life with being a parent, but I love both roles with my whole heart. In the meantime, I'm in the writing cave, typing away at book three.
